Fringe Yarn Calculator
How much yarn to fringe a blanket, scarf or shawl — total and cut length.
2080 in of yarn
Cut 160 strands at 13 in each (folded in half, plus a little for the knot).
How to use
- Count how many fringes you will add along the edge — usually one every few stitches.
- Enter the finished (hanging) length you want each fringe to be, and how many strands go into each fringe.
- Pick inches or centimetres.
- Read the total yarn to set aside and the length to cut each strand — already doubled for the fold, plus a little for the knot.
Good to know
- Each strand folds in half through the edge, so its cut length is about twice the finished length. A small allowance (1 in / 2.5 cm) is added for the fold and knot.
- Thicker, fuller fringe uses more strands per fringe; a light fringe might use 2, a chunky one 6 or more.
- Cut a couple of extra strands — it is easier to trim the ends even at the end than to add more later.
FAQ
- How long should I cut each strand?
- About twice the finished length you want the fringe to hang, plus a little for the fold and knot. This calculator gives you that cut length directly.
- How many strands per fringe?
- It depends on the look and yarn weight — 2 to 4 is common for a light fringe, 6 or more for a full, chunky one. Enter your choice and the total updates.
- How many fringes should I add?
- Space them evenly along the edge, often every 2 to 4 stitches. Count the spots you will attach fringe and enter that number.
