Stitches Per Needle Calculator
Split your stitches evenly across DPNs or magic-loop sections.
16 · 16 · 16 · 16
16 sts on each needle.
How to use
- Enter the total number of stitches on the round.
- Enter how many needles (or magic-loop sections) you are dividing across — usually 3 or 4 for DPNs, 2 for magic loop.
- Read how many stitches go on each needle; when it does not divide evenly, the first needles hold one extra.
- Slip the stitches onto each needle to match, and join to knit in the round.
Good to know
- When the total does not divide evenly, the leftover stitches sit on the first needles so no needle differs by more than one stitch.
- Keeping the count balanced avoids loose "ladders" where needles meet — a small difference is fine and normal.
- For magic loop, use 2 sections (front and back of the loop). For DPNs, 3 or 4 working needles is typical.
FAQ
- How many needles should I use for socks?
- On double-pointed needles, sock stitches are usually split across 3 or 4 needles and worked with one more. Magic loop splits them into 2 halves instead.
- Does it matter which needle holds the extra stitches?
- Not much. This calculator puts the extras on the first needles for a consistent result; as long as no needle is far off the others, your knitting stays even.
- Can I use this for crochet or Portuguese knitting?
- Yes — anywhere you divide a round of stitches into equal groups, the split is the same. Read "needle" as "section".
