Granny Square Blanket Calculator

How many granny squares (or motifs) to make a blanket of your size.

150 squares

10 across × 15 down — finishes about 100 × 150 cm.

How to use

  1. Crochet or measure one finished square and enter its size.
  2. Enter the blanket width and height you are aiming for.
  3. If you join with a border or sashing between squares, enter that join width; leave it 0 for zero-gap joins.
  4. Read how many squares across and down, the total to make, and the size it actually finishes at.

Good to know

  • The counts round to whole squares, so the finished size lands close to — not exactly — your target. Adjust the square size or blanket size to fine-tune.
  • Make a couple of spare squares; it is easier than coming up short, and they are handy for gauge or repairs.
  • Any square motif works — classic granny, solid granny, or a stitch-pattern square — as long as they all finish the same size.

FAQ

How do I know my finished square size?
Crochet one square in your yarn and hook, block it the way you will block the blanket, and measure it. Blocking can change the size noticeably.
What is the join width for?
If you join squares with a row of stitches, a border, or sashing strips between them, that adds space. Enter that width so the grid and finished size stay accurate; use 0 for squares sewn edge to edge.
Does this work for hexagons or other motifs?
It is built for squares laid in a grid. Hexagons and other shapes tessellate differently, so use it as a rough guide for those and expect to adjust.
